More than 2 million Moldovan citizens have freely traveled to the EU in the last 5 years

April 26, 2019, Chişinău – In the period 2014-2019, over 2 million Moldovan citizens have benefited from the freedom of movement in the European space, registering over 6 million border crossings. The Republic of Moldova was the first among Eastern Partnership countries being granted visa free regime with the European Union.

Over the five years, the Moldovan authorities have ensured fulfillment of the benchmarks required under visa free regime with the European Union, its good functioning continues to be ensured, while implementing reforms in key areas.

For its part, the MFAEI has constantly informed Moldovan citizens on their rights and obligations under visa-free travel regime to the Schengen zone, including the rules on entry and legal stay on the territory of the EU Member States, by producing the informative Guide on travels to the European space and different informational campaigns. Visa-free regime is open to all Moldovan citizens, holders of valid biometric passport, including from the Transnistrian region.

According to the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), about 0.3% of refusals of entry and 0.5% cases of irregular stay were registered. Therefore, Moldovan citizens have a responsible attitude towards freedom of movement in the European space.

The Visa-free regime facilitates contacts between people, offering Moldovan citizens the opportunity to participate in various professional training programs, conferences and thematic sessions for students, teachers, which represents a real value in strengthening human contacts and approaching European values.

Recent statistical data:

By the end of the year 2014, 241.415 Moldovan citizens, holders of valid biometric passports, have traveled to the Schengen zone and by the end of 2018 – 1.907.647 citizens. From April 28th, 2014 to March 31st, 2019, 2.019.499 Moldovan citizens holders of biometric passports traveled to the Schengen zone, thus the total number of border crossings in this period amounted to 6.245.337.
